So Now You Know!

Day 4 of my Canary Island trip has seen the weather gods bequeath a morning mix of sun and cloud. This meteorological zeitgeist meaning a cooler feel accompanies the writing of today’s blog.

However, this minor temperate drop detracts not from GJ Strachan’s overall enjoyment of the vacation. As TV chef Ainsley Harriet once taught us, “It is better to simmer than swelter!” He was referring to utilising a slow cooker not solar ray jeopardy, however on some level the suggestion bears comparison.

Even if I’d have had my nose put out of joint by this slight decrease in warmth, my spirits have been raised as I write by a WhatsApp picture from my son. This a photo of his beautiful month old daughter Rosie. This verve enhancing pic accompanied by the heartwarming greeting “Morning grandad Gary!” A sight which would thaw the iciest of my moods.

I did not get to participate in last night’s online quiz (referenced in blog Atlantic Views) with some mates back in the UK. Logistical issues surrounding a suitable location to partake resulting in being forced to leave the inquisitorial challenge almost as soon as dialling in. The quieter hotel bar I’d planned to use during the event not providing an adequate level of silence required to take part.

Consequently, I forwarded my round of questions to my brother Ian, who was also scheduled to attend, to read in my absence… As I write, I’m unaware whether he had opportunity to read out the absurd fictional ‘True or False’ questions I sent relating to the Canary Isles and my holiday.

Disclaimer – All question and responses written for the quiz round I forwarded to our kid are fictional … Utter hogwash created with the express intention of raising a titter, or (at the very least) relief from indigestion.

My inquisitorial offering playing out as follows:-

  1. True or False – People indigenous to the Canaries have the capacity to smell gas leaks in coal mines? – True
  2. True or False – Fuerteventuras historic 1998 yeast famine bizarrely took place in 1996? – True
  3. True or False – The pool man Maurice frowns upon hotel guests urinating in the swimming pool?… False. He does, though, go apeshit if the staff do it!
  4. True. or False – The pork steak I ate for dinner on Tuesday was slightly overcooked? – True
  5. True or False – In 1995, Tina Turner worked incognito as part of this hotel’s entertainment staff under the name of Julie Crabtree? False. – She performed under the pseudonym of Juliet Carruthers.
  6. True or False – If you unravelled the iconic Corralejo Tapestry, there would be enough yarn to stretch twice around the moon. False – You would, though, severely piss off the tapestries weaver Martina Pedres.
  7. True or False – Each Wednesday, on the island of Gran Canaria a circumcised bull’s foreskin is sacrificed at the altar for the Goddess of Travel, Judith Chalmers? False
  8. True or False – The clock on Jandia’s town hall clock is famously always 11 minutes slow? True
  9. True or False – Jandia’s mayor Francis Teatro is equally famous for always being 11 minutes late for council meetings? False – He not stupid enough to use the town hall clock for timekeeping purposes.
  10. True or False – They say it never rains, but it pours? True
So now you know!!
