As They Were

Well, after three weeks of denial, the US Republican Party have green lighted the commencement of a presidential power transition to Joe Biden.

This concession made despite Trump campaign lawyer Rudi Giuliani still endeavouring to unearth dead people who voted (not literally of course). His team seemingly also pursuing their batshit crazy conspiracy theories.

It’s pleasing the election appears close to a much needed conclusion. That being said, there’s part of me which’ll miss the whole sorry shit show. After all, events before, during and after this circus have been top drawer entertainment. Episodes imparting me with more than just a little schadenfreude from witnessing the Narcissist-in-Chief flounder.

Like a rubber-necker slowing down on a motorway to witness a crash site on the opposite carriageway, you just can’t restrain yourself from taking a peek. Like that car crash, the whole election campaign may’ve potentially terrible consequences, but you still watch.

Witnessing this campaign leading to me developing an addiction whereby I required daily fixes from Fox Noos, CNN, MSNBC, and smaller news outlets on either side of the political spectrum.

As an Englishman with no skin in the game, I sought to evaluate campaign proceedings from a neutral position. However, after witnessing weeks of this freak show, it was pretty clear who’d have secured my voted if I’d lived in the land of milk and honey……. Or a contact within the Dominion software team.

Who I’d have chosen will remain between me and the ballot box. However, if I tell you I like my presidents to be less orange, more truthful, less self-serving, more inclusive, less narcissistic and to generally give a f*** about all the nations citizens, you maybe able to unravel that enigma.

Sadly for the US, four years of divisiveness sown by the outgoing Commander-in-Chief, along with his unproven claims the election was stolen from him, will fuel a domestic unrest pyre that’ll take some suppressing.

To be honest, yours truly actually bears no particular leanings to either left or right of the political landscape. In fact my indifference to the subject oft leads to me seeking treatment to remove fence splinters from my ass.

I’ve no beef with Republican ideologies as such, and the fact the GOP held onto a senate majority kinda shows large numbers of Americans don’t either.

I guess the size of Trump’s loss was a showing of voters wanted to administer a slap in his orange face; not decry all Republican senators…… South Carolina even re-elected Lindsay Graham for gods sake!

It appears the games up for Donny; his race run and to the victor the spoils. As Inspector Javert in Les Miserables questioned in refrain after Jean Valjean had spared his life, his thoughts are “How can I now allow this man. To hold dominion over me?”

Footnote – Incidentally, that’s dominion as in holding higher ground; not the Dominion who provided the vote machine software for the US election. I don’t believe 19th century France utilised such technology…… To be honest, I’m not even sure they had elections at the time of the French Revolution.

A little later the tormented Javert telling further of his mental torment:-

“And my thoughts fly apart
Can this man be believed?
Shall his sins be forgiven?
Shall his crimes be reprieved?

And must I now begin to doubt
Who never doubted all these years?
My heart is stone and still it trembles
The world I have known is lost in shadow.”

Yes, ‘Sleepy Joe’ holding dominion will be unpalatable for you Donald. But now at least you’ll have plenty of time on your hands to watch Fox News, AONN and play a shit load of golf….. So, in a nutshell, from January 20th 2021 things’ll be pretty much as they were.
